Followup 1 year later Review by Bitmugger
I've had these bits a year now and used them many times making panels for a workbench, more doors a low sitting bench and a few other things. They continue to be sharp and work well especially in the hardwood I've been using.
Now that I've made some notes and a reference piece I find setup much quicker than when I started out but plan on using some scrap wood of the correct thickness each time to get it dialed in just right.
I'd recommend these to anyone, they work well and continue to go strong. (Posted on 9/14/11) -
Very happy with my purchase Review by Bitmugger
I picked up the 2 cutter version of these bits as that was all they had on hand at one of their woodworking seminars (I believe they offer it in a 3 cutter version too though).
So far I've made a practice door and and 3 real doors with it all using 3/4 pine. There's a little fussy work with getting it setup the first time (particularly with the rail and style bits) but once you get it, run a small reference piece through and set it aside as a quick setup guide for next time.
The cutters cut great, I was able to do rail and style's in one pass but needed to setup some 1/4" pieces against my fence and do the door panels in 4 passes, even then my Triton 2.5hp router felt like it was working a bit so next time I might do it across 5 passes.
The finished cut was good no burning. As I said I used pine, on the end grain of the pine I did get a little tearing (with the panel bit) but I ran a scrap piece of maple I had through on the end grain and it was smooth as a baby's bottom so I think it's more a problem with the softer pine. Experimenting with the feed rate and RPM on the router might have solved this too. I was making 3 doors for some utility cabinets and wasn't concerned enough to fuss about it.
Mine came in a nice wooden box that was finished different (darker and varnished) then the one in the picture here but otherwise is the same.
As shaker doors often don't have a raised panel it would be handy if this set was also offered in a 2 bit version as I've seen other manufacturers do. I wanted a raised panel bit so the 3 bit package was great for me.
