Better than advertised! Review by Russ in Southern Oregon
I have a Shopbot, a CNC router. I love the things it allows me to do but I have always hated doing all the little sanding jobs it creates. On the Shopbot forum someone suggested a drum sander would help. I did lots of research and after recovering from sticker shock, I came across Stockroom Supply. I read the writeup and it sounded good to me. I ordered a 30 inch 'Works' kit. When it arrived it had the plans for building the box. I input the information into my software for the Shopbot and cut out the box. I quickly put the system together and grabbed a piece of rough cut cedar I had just picked up at the lumber yard. I flipped on the switch and slid the rough cut board across the sander and it quickly smoothed out that rough cut board. Not only was it smooth but the dust from the sander was almost non-existant. To say I'm satisfied is very much an understatement. (Posted on 6/26/11)
Great product and even better support Review by Chris in Minnesota
I bought the 30" V-Drum kit and the top at the Dallas woodworking show and had it shipped to my house. When the top arrived, it had been damaged in shipping. I sent one email asking about the procedure to get it exchanged and the response was that a new top was on its way and should arrive shortly.
I watched the DVD instructions on how to build the sander, cut all the parts and assembled it in a little over two hours and that includes the time necessary to run to the hardware store to get a piano hinge and a power switch. I spent about half an hour fiddling with it to get the height of the drum just right. I didn't get the top on perfectly level so I needed to shim the bearings on one end. All in all, the assembly went smoothly.
For its first use I set it up with 120 grit paper and ran a few hundred square feet of reclaimed oak flooring through to clean off all the grit, dirt, old finish etc before I ran it through the planer. It worked great and it's the first time I've ever cleaned up flooring without ruining a set of planer knives.
In the last year I've used it to take the finish off a table top that had been drawn on with permanent marker, sanded all the parts for new deck rails, sanded about 30 cabinet doors, eve more drawer fronts and all the face frame parts and I'm still using the original 2 rolls of sandpaper it came with.
After a year of use, I'm extremely happy with my purchase and couldn't have matched the performance with another sander at even twice the price.
